What, how, where, when?
The hot air balloon industry in Marrakech is relatively new.
If we compare Marrakech with Cappadoce in Turkey we are still a long way from mass ballooning. We have to take into account that this is still a relatively young industry with the first licenses only issued in 2007.
The industry has to follow, due to the busy airport in the centre of Marrakech, respect strict regulations.
Maximum altitude allowed to about 10000m. 3000ft
For each flight, a flight plan must be submitted to the relevant administration the evening before. (The route is highly regulated)
Subsequently, before the flight, a take-off OK, by radio or telephone, must be obtained from the control tower (TAC) of Marrakech.

How does such a flight go?
From a flight technical, point of view, there are two good periods during the day to take a flight early in the morning and just before sunset when the thermals are suitable. Most of the flights take place in the morning.
When you make a reservation, preferably not do it the last day of the vacation, then the reservation is always subject to the weather conditions on the day itself.
Below you will find the different contacts so you can inform yourself or make a reservation.

Getting up early morning hours is a must.
All companies have their vehicles that will come to pick you up at your hotel, apartment or riad. Departure is just before sunrise in Jbilet. This is the zone that counts as an official departure zone for all companies. The location is just behind the soccer stadium of Marrakech.
The preparation is as always spectacular. Once in the air, you will see the desert-like flora and the typical villages built of earth. The views of the Atlas and the Koutoubia with the rising sun are further highlights on this flight.
After about an hour flight you will land.
There can be up to twelve people in a hot air balloon. You can choose variations such as an exclusive breakfast tête a tête only accompanied by the pilots.
Some options allow you to make a tour with camels after your arrival but I kept it on the flight and my local speciality, a cup of mint tea and of course my flight brevet.
What does it cost?
Public rates fluctuate around175Euro pp with variations up and down. When you book direct, you usually get a nice discount.
Here you can make a reservation.
