A STAY IN THE MEDINA.
FOR THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING FOR A CHANGE OF SCENERY!
The "Medina " is the beating heart of Marrakech and with "Jemaa el Fna" Marrakech is also known for having the largest market in the whole of Africa. The Medina has a surface area over 600 ha with a population density of 350 people per ha. Since 1985, the Medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this area, you will find traditional riads, historical monuments and sights without forgetting the local life behind the 19km of the rampart.
This rampart, made up of a mixture of red clay, stones and heat, stretches for nineteen kilometres and in some places reaches a height of almost eight metres. The walls are interrupted by towers every thirty-five metres and twenty-two gates built throughout history.
In recent years, the Medina has changed a great deal. Many houses, riads and Palaces have been bought by foreigners who turned them into guesthouses. Today Marrakech has about a thousand guesthouses, most of which are located in the Medina.
Despite these changes, the Medina remains as before a hectic place where the daily life continues as before.
The Medina has a natural hustle and bustle and therefore not the right place if you are looking for a quiet place. But it remains the ideal place for those looking for an authentic experience in Marrakech and an obligatory visit for those who visit Marrakech.
Some tips.
Look for a riad where you have parking space nearby.
After 22h00 the medina becomes a different place. Like everywhere else
in the world, follow your instinct and stay safe.
The Medina is divided into different neighbourhoods. You always have to go through one of the large gates before you enter your neighbourhood. Good to remember the name of the gate.
