Villa Mabrouka; A Luxury Retreat with a Unique DNA

Villa Mabrouka, main house situated in the lush gardens.

A Timeless Experience at Villa Mabrouka in Tangier: A Perfect Blend of History, Luxury, and Tranquility

One of the greatest perks of my profession is the rare opportunity to spend nights in some of the world’s most enchanting places. Since 2008, many of those locations have been in Morocco, where the captivating landscapes, rich culture, and warm people never cease to amaze me. On a recent road trip through southern Spain, I decided to embrace a carefree "la vie est belle" mindset, turning my journey into a memorable adventure. It started with a relaxing night in Casablanca at one of my favorite urban hotels, followed by a stay at one of Morocco’s iconic retreats—a place where history, culture, and serenity converge. This retreat? Villa Mabrouka in Tangier.

The Arrival: A Magical First Impression

Arriving at Villa Mabrouka just before sunset, I was immediately struck by its breathtaking location overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. On a sunny January day, the beauty of the villa and its surroundings seemed to transport me into another world. As evening descended, the atmosphere at Villa Mabrouka swept me away—its architectural elegance, impeccable service, and tranquil ambiance made me feel as though I had stepped into a different era. It was one of those rare moments that takes you by surprise, evoking a sense of nostalgia for a time when the world felt larger, and each place had its own soul.

The French term dépaysement came to mind—a feeling of being transported into a completely unfamiliar environment, away from the mundane. In that moment, Villa Mabrouka offered me just that: a serene escape into a timeless world.

Villa Mabrouka: More Than Just a Stay, It's an Experience

Located in the hills of Tangier, Villa Mabrouka offers more than just a luxurious place to rest your head. It’s an experience, a journey into the heart of Moroccan charm and history. The villa’s grounds are an oasis of peace, with vibrant gardens and thoughtfully designed interiors that immerse guests in both the rich culture of Morocco and modern meditaran touch. I personally am a fan of those white walls which let me travel even more in my mind to those special places of the Med. region.

What’s even more remarkable is the villa’s transformation. After four years of careful rebuilding, Villa Mabrouka evolved from a private residence into an extraordinary retreat that harmoniously blends historical architecture with contemporary comforts. The result is a space that feels both timeless and modern. Each room reflects a modern elegance, while the soul of the villa remains together with the gardens firmly rooted in its original design.

Impeccable Service and Unique Atmosphere

One of the highlights of my stay was the outstanding service. The staff, impeccably dressed and always attentive, added to the overall sense of luxury. However, it was the delicate perfume of the sea breeze—carried through the lush gardens and drifting into my suite—that truly set the tone. This enchanting scent was simple yet unforgettable, perfectly complementing the serenity of the villa.

Villa Mabrouka’s deep connection to the land and the people of Tangier is evident in every corner. From its origins to its role in cultural exchanges, the villa tells the story of many travelers who’ve been captivated by its beauty. It’s a place where history meets luxury, offering guests an unforgettable blend of both.

A Storied Past: Yves Saint Laurent’s Influence

Villa Mabrouka’s legacy is as rich as the landscape that surrounds it. In the late 1990s, Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé purchased the villa, adding their own chapter to its history. For the last decades of his life, Yves Saint Laurent found solace in the villa’s peaceful atmosphere and stunning views, leaving a lasting mark on the property. His influence is still palpable today, contributing to the villa’s elegant yet relaxed ambiance.

In 2019, British designer Jasper Conran bought the villa, continuing its tradition of attracting creative minds. Each owner has contributed to its distinct character, ensuring that Villa Mabrouka remains a living, breathing piece of history, constantly evolving yet preserving its essence.

A Sanctuary in the Heart of Tangier

For those seeking a truly unique and secluded experience in Tangier, Villa Mabrouka is a gem. Guests can choose to stay in one of the charming garden cottages, offering privacy and an intimate connection with nature. Alternatively, the main villa offers grandeur, with spacious rooms, meticulous décor, and sweeping views of the Mediterranean.

To truly appreciate the tranquility and magic of Villa Mabrouka, a minimum stay of three nights is often required. Whether in the cottages or the main villa, each accommodation offers a sanctuary where you can disconnect from the world, recharge, and bask in the natural beauty surrounding you.

A Timeless Escape

In a world where everything often feels too fast-paced and too familiar, Villa Mabrouka offers a rare escape—dépaysement in its truest form. It’s a reminder of the wonder and beauty that still exists in the world, a place that not only feels like a dream but gives you the space to dream even more.

For anyone in search of a place where history, elegance, and nature come together in perfect harmony, Villa Mabrouka in Tangier is a sanctuary you won’t soon forget.

But as much as I wished for my stay to be endless, I saw my ferry approaching in the harbor, signaling the end of my time at this magical place. For those who wish to experience Villa Mabrouka, make sure to plan your trip in advance, as this beloved and sought-after property fills up quickly.
